School Lunches Improvements Need Your Support

The reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, the federal legislation that determines school
food policy and resources, is moving in Congress. The bills introduced for reauthorization
include several health-promoting policy provisions but do not include adequate funding to
make fundamental change for healthy school food.

The House of Representatives Education and Labor Committee will begin mark-up of the
bill today, July 14. The current version of the House bill increases the school food
reimbursement rate by only six cents per meal, not enough for schools to make
health-promoting changes to support students' wellness and learning.

Now, representatives need to hear that the public supports increased funding for healthy school food. If you’d like your voice to be heard on this issue, now is the time to speak up!
Please take a moment to contact your representative in support of a timely and
well-funded reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act. Link to:

USDA Can Stand Up to Monsanto... with your support

Although it was reported as a wholesale victory for Monsanto, the recent Supreme Court decision on "Roundup Ready" alfalfa has actually put food activists in a good position to maintain the ban on Monsanto's genetically engineered GMO seeds.

The court ruled that the planting of GMO alfalfa is still illegal, but it assigned authority to the USDA to determine whether to allow some provisional planting to go forward as soon as next spring.
The responsibility for maintaining a total ban on the GMO seeds — and protecting organic crops from potential contamination — falls squarely on the shoulders of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack.

California Terminates Battery Caged Eggs

In 2008, millions of California voters agreed that egg-laying hens should be allowed to stand up, turn around, lie down, and extend their wings. Now, a new law requires that all eggs sold in the state come from hens given the same freedoms.  Details at:

Chicken, Steak Top List of Five Most Dangerous Foods to Grill

Barbecuing Creates Carcinogenic Compound in Meats;
Dietitians Suggest Safer Choices

WASHINGTON—Grilled chicken contains dangerously high levels of a carcinogenic compound, putting it at the top of a new list of the five worst foods to grill.
Based on analysis by dietitians with the nonprofit Cancer Project,
the list highlights the risk of heterocyclic amines (HCAs), a cancer-causing
chemical produced by high heat in many commonly barbecued meats.

Meat need not be charred or well done to contain these chemicals.
Testing has found HCAs in grilled chicken patties cooked for just three minutes on each side.  The report offers healthier alternatives that do not produce HCAs when grilled, including vegetable kabobs, vegetarian “chicken” patties, and veggie burgers.

Mercy for Animals Makes Great Progress in Ohio

Just recently, once it became known that animal advocates had gathered enough signatures to put the initiative on the ballot, animal agriculture finally agreed to discuss meaningful reforms.  And today, just hours before over 500,000 signatures were slated to be filed, a major animal protection agreement was reached - preventing costly and contentious campaigning.

A landmark settlement was reached between animal protection advocates, Gov. Ted Strickland, and the Ohio agribusiness lobby.

The agreement includes recommendations from all of the parties for the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, the Legislature, and the Governor to adopt the following provisions:

  • A ban on veal crates effective in 2017, the same year provided in the ballot measure.
  • A ban on new gestation crates in the state after Dec. 31, 2010. Existing facilities are grandfathered,
but must cease use of these crates within 15 years.
  • A moratorium on permits for new battery cage confinement facilities for laying hens
Going for a veggie garden burger is sounding better all the time !
