Another Strike Against Red Meat with Diabetes Risks

Higher intakes of red and processed meat are associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Paula Dean the TV chef well known for her recipes of grossly excessive fat, sugar and meat (pork) is a classic example
She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 years ago, yet only recently announced it to the public after agreeing to commercially endorse a drug therapy to combat this disease.

Michael Dansinger, M.D., an assistant professor at Tufts School of Medicine has been the behind-the-scenes nutrition doctor for the TB show the Biggest Loser.  He states "the medications of diabetes do such an incomplete job at reversing the complications, of all the weight related diseases, diabetes response the most dramatically to lifestyle change".  The TV show highlights that eating better and regular exercise provides a life style change that is potent medicine".

FDA Limits Livestock Antibiotic Usage

FDA is finally restrict the use of cephalosporin antibiotics, which are given to some cattle, pigs, chickens and turkeys before slaughter.  They were often being given to healthy animals to spur growth or to keep them well in unsanitary concentrated/confined feedlot operations (CAFOs).  Massive use of antibiotics could endanger human lives by building up resistance to them with medications used for pneumonia, skin infections, meningitis and other diseases.

Advocates have praised the restriction, but still believe it hasn’t gone far enough.  Rep. Loise Slughter, D-N.Y., a microbiologist who pressured the government on this issue stated:  “we don’t have time for the FDA to ploddingly take half-measures.  We are staring at a massive public health threat in the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.”  More needs to be done, but this is real progress.

Fiber Decreases Colorectal Cancer Risk

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal upgraded fiber’s protective effects from “probable” to “convincing”, for reducing colorectal cancer risk.  Researchers found for every 10 grams of total fiber or ceral fiber intake, risk decreased 10%.  In addition, those consuming 3 servings of whole grains per day decreased their risk by 20%.  Fiber is ONLY found in plant-based foods.  The more meat & dairy a person eats, typically they ingest less fiber.

Food for Thought ---

"In India, food is powerfully embedded in the broader culture. But some aspects of Indian food are more difficult to swallow. Poor infrastructure means that food worth an estimated $10 billion is lost each year, while nearly half of young children are underweight.

Yet how much better are things in the U.S.? More Americans live on food stamps than do people anywhere else in the world, while 50 percent of all food—worth $136 billion—is thrown away each year.
In India, meals remain at the heart of family life; 19% of American meals are eaten in cars. Agriculture employs half of the Indian population; in America, that figure is less than 1 percent.
In India, one in 20 is obese; in America, one in three."
